Zinedine Zidane Only Wants the France Job

According to sources close to ESPN, former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is eyeing one job and one job only: manager of the France national team. The former French No. 10 is reportedly the coach-in-waiting for Les Bleus and is turning down any job offer on the table at the moment.

The current Les Bleus manager, Didier Deschamps, is on the hot seat after France’s elimination from this year’s Euros. The loaded French squad was the favorite to win the tournament, but was bounced in the Round of 16 by Switzerland. And while Deschamps did deliver a World Cup win in 2018, some questionable decisions at this year’s major tournament – including the three at the back approach against Switzerland – and a possible struggle to manage the locker room personalities, could see the 52-year-old’s run with the team end.

Zidane is reportedly waiting for Deschamps’ tenure with France to end in 2022 after the World Cup or after the 2024 Euros. No timeline has been announced regarding the latter’s continued future with the national team, but expect it to be a quick turnaround if a dip in form occurs.

French FA president Noel Le Graet was interested earlier this year in having Zidane fill the managerial role if Deschamps stepped down, but that didn’t happen. Le Graet did confirm that Deschamps will remain as the France manager, despite the interest from France’s greatest player.

Zidane won three Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles with Real Madrid in two very successful, albeit short, stints with the club. It will be interesting to see if a change in Les Bleus leadership is going to be sooner, rather than later, but for now, Deschamps is still the man in charge.
