Javonte Williams Looks To Be Denver’s Starting RB for 2021
The Denver Broncos traded up to get Javonte Williams with the 35th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After Melvin Gordon had a productive 2020 season, the Broncos clearly wanted another back to take the burden off Gordon and landed Williams. However, numerous reports from Broncos’ training camp suggest that Williams could beat out Gordon as the number one running back.
Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post did a weekly mailbag where he answered a number of questions from Bronco fans. One of the questions pertained to Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams. The question read, “Ryan, how much of an impact do you think running back Javonte Williams will have this year? I didn’t see much of him in college, but he looks like he could be the bruising monster to Melvin Gordon’s finesse.” That was from Bobby Parker.
First off, great question by Mr. Parker. Williams was a monster at breaking tackles at North Carolina and could provide a power style of running that Gordon does not offer. O’Halloran said that if Gordon has a productive minicamp, he will likely see most of the reps but he predicted that Williams would lead the team in rushing attempts and yards in 2021.
Last week I wrote an article on Javonte Williams and his fantasy value in 2021. Like O’Halloran, I noted that while I think Williams will be the featured back by the end of the season, Gordon should see most of the first-team reps during training camp. Once Williams gets adjusted to life as an NFL running back and is acclimated to the Denver offense, there is no doubt he should be the starting back.
Melvin Gordon spoke on the competition between him and Williams, vowing to help the rookie as much as he can. He noted that when he was a rookie with the Chargers, Danny Woodhead helped Gordon get accustomed to the NFL. He hopes to do the same with Javonte Williams, even if it means losing his starting job.
