NBA Superteam Creation for Each Division

Full disclosure, I came up with this idea based on Garrett’s post last week where he created NFL superteams per division. It was great. After reading that and pondering the idea, I decided to create an NBA superteam version. Each division’s best ten-man squad is ranked in order from worst to best. If I offend your team or favorite player, sorry, not sorry.

Rules

This will not be position-based. I believe in a free-flowing offense and if I choose to put Stephen Curry at shooting guard and move LeBron James to point, that is what will happen.

Each team will be comprised of a starting five and a five man bench.

Every division will be represented and will be ranked based on how I believe the squads would play if they assembled tomorrow. This is not a knock on the young bucks who will be stars in a couple years, but a recognition of the elite talent in the league at the moment. Also, players who are injured are magically healed in this scenario.

6. NBA Superteam: Southwest

Starting Five:

• Ja Morant
• Luka Dončić
• Brandon Ingram
• Zion Williamson
• Christian Wood

Bench:

• John Wall
• Dejounte Murray
• DeMar DeRozan
• Dillon Brooks
• Jonas Valanciunas

This squad has loads of young talent in the backcourt, but not a lot of frontcourt depth. A group of Williamson, Wood, and Valanciunas would have any coach head over heels, but they cannot compare to the other squads on this list. The starters are elite, but that is par for the course on this list. A backcourt of Dončić and Morant is spectacular and either Ingram or DeRozan would serve well at small forward, though I went with Ingram because of his size and length, both of which will be needed on the defensive end. The team has a solid bench as well but lacks a true three-point threat. That is why they rank last on this list.

5. NBA Superteam: Southeast

Starting Five:

• Trae Young
• Bradley Beal
• Jimmy Butler
• Bam Adebayo
• John Collins

Bench:

• Russell Westbrook
• LaMelo Ball
• Victor Oladipo
• Jonathan Isaac
• Terry Rozier

I nearly started Westbrook, but this lineup is arguably better. Young and Collins will prove constant pick-and-roll action, and the defensive abilities of Butler and Adebayo are always beneficial. Throw in scoring from Beal, and this starting five looks lethal. The bench is questionable and I struggled to find the 8-10 spots, but I landed on the trio of Isaac, Oladipo and Rozier because they can all play. That being said, this team lacks frontcourt depth and that hole drops their rankings.

4. NBA Superteam: Central

Starting Five:

• Malcolm Brogdon
• Zach Lavine
• Khris Middleton
• Giannis Antetokounmpo
• Domantas Sabonis

Bench:

• Jerami Grant
• Nikola Vucevic
• Collin Sexton
• Jrue Holiday
• Caris LeVert

Antetokounmpo and Sabonis form an immaculate frontcourt and the backcourt offers composure in Brogdon, shooting in Middleton, and explosiveness in Lavine. The bench almost offers like-for-like subs too, although they are obviously not as talented as the starting five. Holiday can easily slide into the point guard slot, Sexton offers great scoring as an off-the-ball guard and LeVert is a wing scoring threat. Grant is long and lanky and can get buckets at the four while Vucevic comes in as a great backup center. This is a talented and balanced squad.

3. NBA Superteam: Northwest

Starting Five:

• Damian Lillard
• Donovan Mitchell
• Michael Porter Jr.
• Nikola Jokic
• Rudy Gobert

Bench:

• Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
• Jamal Murray
• Karl-Anthony Towns
• C.J. McCollum
• Mike Conley

This team would rain buckets but is worrisome defensively. Lillard and Mitchell as the backcourt is simply unfair, and Porter Jr. is a solid wing who can fill it up. A frontcourt of Jokic and Gobert gives any coach a playmaking big and a defensive anchor, but issues would arise if Gobert was put in scenarios akin to what the Clippers did to him this postseason. Gobert being forced to chase players on the wing is a nightmare and could spell trouble for this squad. This bench is very talented, provides a lot of scoring, but is really small. Regardless, this squad is menacing, but just cannot match up with the two teams left.

2. NBA Superteam: Atlantic

Starting Five:

• James Harden
• Kyrie Irving
• Jayson Tatum
• Kevin Durant
• Joel Embiid

Bench:

• Jaylen Brown
• Julius Randle
• Kyle Lowry
• Pascal Siakam
• Seth Curry

The starting five speaks for itself but I will gladly say a few things about it. Jayson Tatum as the fifth option on the court demonstrates a hilarious abundance of wealth. The team also has Durant, the most unguardable player in league history, Harden, a triple-double machine, Irving, a guard with arguably the deepest bag in the NBA, and Embiid, who is excellent in the first half. The bench has defensive versatility, poise and shooting. It is a fantastic squad and I would pay a lot of money to see them go toe-to-toe with the division ranked ahead of them.

1. NBA Superteam: Pacific

Starting Five:

• LeBron James
• Stephen Curry
• Devin Booker
• Kawhi Leonard
• Anthony Davis

Bench:

• Chris Paul
• Paul George
• Klay Thompson
• Draymond Green
• Deandre Ayton

As if it could be any other division. This starting five is ridiculous. It includes a combination of Curry and James, and I would jump at any opportunity to watch those two play together (if only they were playing in the Tokyo Olympics!). I almost slipped Thompson or George in the starting lineup, but Booker offers some good mid-range game that can free up Curry on the wing. The bench’s defensive versatility only compounds this squad’s dominance – it is uber-talented from top to bottom and without a doubt would be the number one superteam in the league.
