Mike Soroka Re-Tears His Achilles

Bad news ensues for the Atlanta Braves. Starting Pitcher Mike Soroka will miss the remainder of the season after re-tearing his Achilles while walking back to the team’s clubhouse at Truist Park. He will undergo surgery, keeping him off the mound until at least next season.

For the Braves, this really hurts them in all facets. Soroka had an incredible rookie year with the Braves in 2019. He posted a 2.86 era with 171 strikeouts in 214.0 innings pitched. An all-star that year; after finishing second in rookie of the year voting, the ceiling for the then 21-year-old seemed high as ever.

The Initial Injury

Soroka had torn his Achilles in a start against the New York Mets last August while trying to cover first on a double-play attempt. In the video, you can see right away how severe the injury was. Earlier this season, Soroka had a setback in his recovery process. Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters that Soroka would miss the remainder of the season following the injury. Snitker then backtracked and said the window for Soroka to return could be this season.

Now, with the complete re-tear of his achilles, Soroka will have to wait even longer before he can return to the mound.

Tearing The Achilles Twice

An important question regarding the news is how a second Achilles tear would affect the body and recovery process as a whole. Unfortunately, it does not usually fair well as Jeff Passan confirmed in a tweet. The attachment was a study performed by The Department of Orthopaedics, and the result could mean trouble for Soroka. I say could, because Soroka is still only 23-years-old. He can recover, but it will be a long and daunting process for both him and the Braves.

Mike Soroka and The Braves

This injury obviously affects the Braves and their plan for the rest of the season. While it was unknown whether or not Soroka would have returned sometime this season, the Braves must have had a plan for him had he returned. Now, the Braves may have to look to the market to potentially trade for a starting pitcher if they plan to compete the rest of the year.
