Johnathan Abram Vying For Breakout 2021 NFL Season
Johnathan Abram has had a shaky start to his NFL career so far. After being selected No. 27 overall in the 2019 Draft, the highly anticipated, hard hitting safety saw his rookie season cut short due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 1. In 2020, Abram started in 13 games helping contribute to an 8-8 record that’s the best in Jon Gruden’s second stint with the organization. For 2021, Abram will look to take a big leap to propel Gruden’s Raiders to their first winning season since 2016. In an interview with ESPN, Abram expressed what he feels will be most important in helping him take that leap this upcoming season:
“Just being more consistent. Playing under control. Not really taking that many wild hits, getting myself knocked out of the game [and] hurting my own body… being consistent, being disciplined and constantly just doing my job. Filling my grade sheet with ‘plusses’ every day. Then every Sunday, I think my game will blossom.”

Adjusting His Game
A player known throughout the league for his gut-wrenching hits, Abram knows that he must be smarter about his tackling. A style to his game that has heavily contributed to his injury history, Abram feels that a full offseason will do a lot for his game both physically and mentally.
“Last offseason was a struggle for me coming off the shoulder injury, so this year I stayed around the facility a lot… I’m more than 100 percent, honestly. I’m as strong as I’ve ever been.”

With a healthy Abram at Gus Bradley’s disposal (the original defensive play-caller for Seattle’s Legion of Boom), the third year player should be looking forward to a breakout year. A defensive unit with youth on it’s side, Las Vegas could see much improvement if Abram and other notable players such as Damon Arnette and Clelin Ferrell can live up to each of their first round draft statuses.
