Top 5 Must-See NFL Games for the 2021 Season
The beginning of the 2021-2022 season is the beginning of the 17-game era. With coaches and free agents hired, new rookies drafted, and the official schedule released, there is no better time to look at the 272 games that make up next NFL season. There are almost too many great games to choose from, but here are the must-see NFL games of the 2021-2022 season.
1. Buccaneers at Patriots, Week 4
This game may not have many ramifications in terms of long-term impact on the season, but the NFL has never seen a game like this one, period. Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time, and Bill Belichick, arguably the greatest coach of all time, ran through the NFL the past 20 seasons, winning six Lombardi trophies in the process. Now, however, the two will meet head-to-head, and Gillette Stadium is going to get loud as Brady and fellow former Patriot Rob Gronkowski make their return to Foxborough.
2. Packers at Chiefs, Week 9
The long-awaited matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers is finally happening, provided Rodgers and Green Bay can figure out how to keep Rodgers with the team. On paper, this game is riddled with superstar talent on both rosters, not to mention two top ten coaches in Andy Reid and Matt LaFleur. Rodgers may be the most physically gifted quarterback in NFL history and Mahomes has already been correctly anointed the NFL’s heir apparent. It would not be surprising if the over/under for this game was 70 points, as both teams have high-powered offenses that are sure to go back and forth all game. All that said, if Rodgers does force his way out and Jordan Love or even Blake Bortles has to play in this game, consider it unwatchable.
3. Bills at Chiefs, Week 5
Besides getting a rematch of the AFC Championship from last year, we get to watch two top-five quarterbacks duel it out in Mahomes and Josh Allen. The Bills and Chiefs met twice during the 2020-2021 season and for the most part, the series was dominated by the Chiefs. They gashed the Bills for almost 300 rushing yards in Week 6 and then gave them a 38-24 hammering in the AFC Championship, but the Bills made vast improvements to their defensive line by using their first two picks draft picks on defensive ends. The Chiefs needed a sufficient upgrade after the Tampa Bay defense outmaneuvered their offensive line in the Super Bowl, so they added pro-bowl guard Joe Thuney, traded for left tackle Orlando Brown and added another veteran in Kyle Long. Barring any injuries to Mahomes or Allen, this game is a must-watch.
4. Browns at Ravens, Week 12
Browns – Ravens was arguably the game of the year last year when the Ravens squeaked out a 47-42 victory over Cleveland. That game had everything: Lamar getting injured, the Browns trying to mount a comeback, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt running everywhere, and even a Trace McSorely sighting. After last postseason, the Browns have earned the respect of opposing teams and their team only got better in the offseason. They had a dire need in the secondary and made two really smart signings in John Johnson and Troy Hill. Cleveland also added Jadeveon Clowney, drafted Greg Newsome II, and they will get receiver Odell Beckham Jr. back from injury. The Ravens, who needed receivers last season, found their guys as well, signing Sammy Watkins and drafting Rashod Batemen in the first round.
5. Rams at 49ers, Week 10
I could have made a list like this for just the NFC West. It is easily the best division in football and produces the most entertaining games year after year. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan beat Rams head coach Sean McVay twice last year with CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens, but this year could be a different story for the Rams. McVay has upgraded at quarterback from Jared Goff to Matt Stafford and does not want to lose to his long-time friend again. This game is loaded with stars including Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa and George Kittle. The 49ers were riddled with injuries last season, including major injuries to some of their most important players, but barring any similar misfortunes, they look capable of competing for the division title again. If new 49ers QB Trey Lance is starting by Week 10, this is game is must-see TV.
