Kelvin Benjamin Is Getting A Chance At Redemption

News broke this morning that former first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin is signing with the New York Giants as a Tight End. Earlier this week, it was reported that Benjamin worked out with Big Blue at their minicamp, but it now appears that the pen is being put to paper. Benjamin was a talented if inconsistent receiver who never really found a home in the league. It seemed like the future was bright for him after a solid rookie year, including 9 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards, but the Carolina Panthers had other plans, especially after Benjamin missed his entire second year due to injury. After bouncing around in Buffalo and Kansas City, it looks like his next opportunity will come in the Big Apple.

Benjamin will end a three-year hiatus in the NFL, but this time he will play at tight end. Similar in some respects to Jacksonville’s pickup of Tim Tebow, the Giants are going to ask Benjamin to compete with Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph for snaps at TE. This position change seems like a good fit for Benjamin, who, at 6 foot 5, 245 pounds, resembles the build of the Giant’s new star receiver Kenny Golladay, along with having a larger frame than the 2020 Pro Bowler Engram. After the news, some Giants fans will surely change the conversation to Daniel Jones, whose embarrassment of riches at the skills positions has grown even more after the addition of Benjamin and Saquon Barkley’s return from injury. In order for Benjamin to have a successful comeback, he will need some competent quarterback play.
