Shohei Ohtani Is Nearly Unhittable And His Filthy Splitter Is A Big Reason Why

Shohei Ohtani is a unicorn and has the chance to be remembered as one of the most unique players to ever walk the diamond. The Angels might be a joke, but Ohtani sure as shit is not. The 6-foot-4, two-way beast is becoming unhittable, and his splitter has developed into the filthiest pitch in the sport.

Opponents are hitting an abysmal .028 with 28 strikeouts against Ohtani’s splitter in 36 at-bats this season. Many pitchers around the league have developed elite splitters, but Ohtani’s takes the cake. That puppy disappears perfectly, and few batters even manage to make contact with it.

Ohtani is a dangerous pitcher for a number of reasons. His fastball clocks in at 97 MPH and opposing batters find themselves swinging right over the top of the ball as it flies past. Ohtani’s arsenal also features a slider, cutter, and curveball, and with such a variety of pitches at his disposal, opposing batters are unable to focus solely on containing his superb splitter. On top of his variety, Ohtani’s accuracy is elite as well, and he constantly peppers the bottom of the zone against batters who hesitate to swing against him.

Ohtani’s splitter is the perfect pitch. Pitchers with elite weapons like Ohtani’s splitter rarely fizzle out of the league, and when combined with his other tools, Ohtani appears to be a player who can compete and succeed in the MLB for years to come. This ascent to greatness is just the beginning.

Shohei Ohtani is one of the most fascinating players in any sport. It’s his splitter that people should really take note of. God, that pitch is a thing of beauty.
