Tom Brady Is Not A Fan Of The NFL’s New Rules On Jersey Numbers

Tom Brady Disapproves Of New Uniform Number Rules

Tom Brady is 43-years-old. His age may not show on the field, but it certainly shows when it comes to the so-called ‘old school’ rules in football. Needless to say, Brady was not a fan at all of the NFL’s recent decision to loosen the rules on which numbers players can wear at each position. Essentially, the new rule states: quarterbacks, kickers, and punters can now wear numbers 1-19; defensive backs can wear 1-49; running backs, full backs, tight ends, h-backs and wide receivers can wear 1-49 and 80-89; offensive lineman can wear 50-79 and 90-99; and linebackers can wear 1-59 and 90-99.

Brady seemed to be more vocal on this polarizing rule change than he ever has been on the field when he chews out the refs from time to time. He made several posts on his Instagram story about it and seemed pretty outraged today. But why would that be? As evident by his posts, it appears that he’s angry that it will be more difficult to recognize the positions of each player.

When it comes to criticizing the league, Brady normally pleads the fifth, just as he did in his last couple of years as a New England Patriot. Brady will cuss out his players, coaches, refs, and anyone else that gets in the way of him winning on the field. But for him to come out and be so adamant about his disdain for the new rule change is surprising, to say the least. And for a guy that relies so much on being able to identify defenses pre-snap, I guess you could say most people would be angry in his position.

Will This Rule Stick? Was It The Right Move?

For a league like the NFL where owners typically have the last word, it is a shock to me that they decided to listen to the player’s association for once. Hell, the NFL even relaxed their rules on players using marijuana as well, so the numbers change maybe isn’t all that surprising. Still, it is hard to get used to a new-age NFL where players can celebrate more, smoke weed and not get suspended, and wear virtually whatever numbers they want like they did in college.

Either way, nobody should take what seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady says lightly. The guy must know what he’s talking about considering he’s been in the league going on more than two decades now. He’s been around the block and Brady can voice his opinions more so now than he ever could due to the fact that he’s on the Buccaneers and not the New England patriots who basically practice like it’s a military boot camp. So yeah, say it louder for the people in the back, Tom! Tell ’em how you really feel!
