Hall Of Famer Willie Mays Earns Lifetime Achievement Award

Baseball Digest presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to the Hall of Fame centerfielder Willie Mays earlier today. Other finalists included Vin Scully, the late Henry Aaron, Roland Hermond, Joe Torre, and Rachel Robinson. All were more than deserving but in the end, Mays came out on top.

The Lifetime Achievement represents a living individual who has given a lot to America’s National Pastime on and off the field. The Say Hey Kid completely embodies this as proof with the statistics on the field. He has 660 career home runs (ranking sixth all-time) and 24 All-Star game appearances. On top of that, he has 3,283 career hits, two MVP awards, and a 12-time gold glove award winner. He is also the only player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and 20 triples in a season. Mays spent the bulk of his career with the New York/San Francisco Giants from 1951-1972.

Not only this, but the award also honors Mays’ time spent off the field, helping and caring for people.

I never worried about personal awards. I worried about winning, but to be honored with this Lifetime Achievement Award, that’s a great honor, especially with all the other great names [considered]. All deserving. It’s a sports award, it’s a baseball award, but it’s much more. It’s about all the things you do. For me, it’s about helping kids and making sure they’re taken care of because so many people took care of me in my life.” – Willie Mays in a press release.

Mays will make his fourth appearance on the cover of Baseball Digest. The popular magazine has been publishing issues for baseball lovers every year since 1942. Willie will celebrate his 90th birthday on May sixth as a forever beloved part of the baseball community. He is arguably the greatest all-around player of all time and celebrated by baseball writers, players, and fans alike.
