European Super League Proposal Most Benefits Tottenham

It’s match-day as Spurs take on Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Jose Mourinho’s former side sit third from the bottom, one point behind their North London rivals, as both teams enter the last match-day of the season. Instead of a feisty affair filled with emotion as both clubs battle to beat the drop, a 0-0 boring, emotionless affair is played out as both teams are aware neither will be relegated. Welcome to MLS Europe, also known as the European Super League.

This is the realization of what is about to happen with the introduction of a Super League within European Football. It’s laughable that some of the twelve founding clubs of this abomination are claiming to be top clubs. Since when has Tottenham been a top club? And don’t get me started on Arsenal who can’t even beat Fulham.

IS THIS THE END?

The beautiful game is dying and has been for a while, but the recent news of a European Super League being founded has put it on its last legs. What started as a workers’ game, something anyone could play regardless of income or status, is slowly becoming the game of the elites. And if there is one thing we know about elites it’s that no matter how much money they have they want more. That’s ultimately what this European Super League is about.

While none of the twelve teams who proposed it, the founding clubs as they are being called, are looking to leave their domestic leagues, they ARE looking for a way to line their pockets year in year out. The Super League would replace the Champions League for these teams, which would be a huge win for Tottenham Hotspur who didn’t make it last year and look unlikely to make it this year. Now they won’t even have to qualify.

SO CALLED ‘BIG CLUBS’

This is Tottenham! A team that has never won a Champions League and whose last European success came in the 1980s. They’ve never won a Premier League and their last top-tier title came in 1961. How in the hell are you calling yourself a big club?

But for Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, it’s a massive win. No longer does he have to compete for a top-four finish to earn the right to play the top teams in Europe. He also gets to line his pockets in the process.

The problem with all this is we the fans are now relying on the Premier League, UEFA, and FIFA to do the right thing. Even the thought of that makes me need to take a shower, but that is the realization we are left with. 2021 is going to be a weird year if we are looking to those three to be the saving grace of the beautiful game.
