Alex Smith Announces His Retirement From The NFL

Alex Smith has played his final game in the National Football League. Smith is currently sitting out there on the free agent market after playing this past year for Washington. Nevertheless, Smith has decided to call it quits instead of pursing another job in the league.

The announcement came via Smith’s Instagram account where he posted an inspirational video to go along with it:

Smith, 36, will always be remembered for the way he came back from that horrifying leg injury. Smith was the comeback player in all of our hearts. After almost losing his leg, Smith somehow suited up again in the NFL. It is a moment that will live on in NFL history.

It appears Smith had some suitors if he wanted to return to the NFL. While Washington released him earlier this offseason, it wasn’t inconceivable they would have brought him back as a mentor of sorts. The Texans showed interest in Smith depending on what happens with Deshaun Watson. There were also reports that Urban Meyer was monitoring the situation. Meyer, of course, coached Smith when the two were at Utah.

Alex Smith didn’t exactly have the best on field career. The former Utah product was picked ahead of Aaron Rodgers number one overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. Smith played 14 long years with the 49ers, Chiefs, and the Washington football franchise. Smith also has a Super Bowl ring with Kansas City.
