2021 NFL Draft War Room: San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are not messing around. Clearly unhappy with Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers gave away the farm to solidify the quarterback position. It’s a big draft for San Francisco given the nature of this division. God, it’s going to be a dog fight every week in the NFC West. Here we go. Let’s head inside the 2021 NFL Draft war room!

  • Round 1: No. 3 Overall (from Texans, through Dolphins)
  • Round 2: No. 43
  • Round 3: No. 102
  • Round 4: No. 117
  • Round 5: No. 155, No. 172 (from Saints), No. 180
  • Round 6: No. 194
  • Round 7: No. 230 (from Jets)

While San Francisco traded up, they were able to keep their other picks from this year which is a positive.

All signs point to the 49ers taking Mac Jones with the third pick in the draft. Not the move I’d make, but hey, it’s their funeral. I’ve said this a bunch but there are only so many ways to rephrase it. Jones, to me, is the biggest is the hardest evaluation in the draft. Whoever the 49ers pick, it’s a franchise altering decision.

The 49ers need to think corner in round two. Akhello Witherspoon signed with Seattle. Richard Sherman remains unsigned and will not be returning. It’s Jason Verrett and question marks. Even Verrett is a question mark.

Asante Samuel Jr. seems like a good solution if available in round 2. His dad was pretty damn good. Feels about as safe as it gets in the second round. Samuel is a plug and play starter for a team that needs corners.

Kyle Shanahan can’t help himself. He has to take a running back or wide receiver at some point. Raheem Mostert wasn’t healthy last year. The rest of the bodies at running back are depth pieces at best. Michael Carter out of North Carolina would be a great fit. He can catch and has a shiftiness about him Shanahan should love in the zone scheme. It fits very well…
