The Boston Red Sox are going to need a new sideline reporter for their games in 2021. Guerin Austin has been the sideline reporter for NESN which has the broadcasting rights for the Red Sox for the past six years. The company decided not to renew Austin’s contract so there will be a new face on the TV broadcast.
Chad Finn of The Boston Globe wrote Tuesday, Austin has exited the network after NESN failed to extend her contract:
“NESN is parting ways with Guerin Austin, who spent six years at the network and is best known for her work as the Red Sox in-game reporter.
“Working for the Bruins and the Red Sox was a dream come true and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity,” said Austin in a text. “The interaction I had with the fans is what made this experience truly memorable.
“I appreciate the players, the coaching staff and all of their families who gave me access and time so I could share their stories with the viewers. I’m really excited about the next chapter, but I’ll miss seeing everyone at Fenway.”
A NESN spokesperson confirmed that Austin’s contract recently expired.
“We are grateful for Guerin’s contributions to the broadcast during her time at NESN,” the spokesperson said in a statement.”
Austin, 40, was born in Nebraska and has been a staple during Red Sox games for a long time now. She was a fan favorite and will be missed. There was no reason that was listed why her contract expired. It’s a lot of guessing games now. We also have no news on Austin’s future plans.
Austin isn’t the only one leaving the Red Sox NESN coverage. It was also reported that Steve Lyons will not return either. Lyons has made prior appearances in MLB The Show.
Jahmai Webster who occasionally filled in for Austin will now be taking a full time role as the new side line reporter. Webster is thrilled to have the position, of course.
