The Mets under new owner Steve Cohen named Zack Scott as the acting General Manager after having to fire Jared Porter after ESPN exposed his sexual harassment over the course of his career.
This is the same old Mets, who in the 2020 season hired Carlos Beltran, the former beloved player in Flushing to be their manager. Of course, a few months later the Houston Astros cheating scandal rocked the baseball world. Former owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon decided to relieve Beltran of his duties before even stepping into the spring training facility in Port St. Lucie.
Jared Porter, who replaced Brodie Van Wagenen when Cohen took over the primary ownership of the team made the biggest trade of the offseason thus far, bringing Franciso Lindor to Flushing. Porter lasted less than 40 days in the front office before Jeff Passan dropped the bombshell on the baseball world.
The General Manager position for the Mets is an obscure one, with Sandy Alderson as President of Baseball Operations for the Mets seemingly calling all the shots, there didn’t seem to be a need to bring someone else in for the short term. My only thought behind this is that maybe other major league franchises won’t discuss moving players and trades with the Mets without having a formal GM.
To be honest, I didn’t want to see the Mets hire anyone until Theo Epstein, decided he wanted to join another organization. I was really hoping they would offer him the bag to do what he does best, break curses. Epstein was the main guy in the front office for the 2004 Boston Red Sox and the 2016 Chicago Cubs bringing titles home to those teams after over 90 year droughts.
