South Carolina football came out of its 2020 football season 2-8, the worst record since their 1999 0-11. Something needs to change, and Gamecock Athletics is taking action.
Shane Beamer
With the firing of four-year coach Will Muschamp midseason, who led the Gamecocks to an absolute disaster of a season up until his firing. Mike Bobo, offensive cordinator for Auburn, took over the rest of the season finishing the Gamecocks off at 0-3. Obviously, a change was needed to South Carolina football and it needed to happen fast. On December 5th, 2020, South Carolina head athletic director, Ray Tanner, made it public that the Gamecocks hired Shane Beamer as the head football coach.
Beamer was hired to be the assistant head coach at the University of Oklahoma in 2018, a position. When hired, Beamer made a promise to completely transform the football team, and hire an abundance of new coordinators to the team. Since his hiring, he has brought nine new coordinators onto the team. Jimmy Lindsey, defensive line. Torrian Gray, defensive backs. Byron Jerideau, Asst. Strength & Conditioning. Luke Day, Strength & Conditioning. Clayton White, Defensive coordinator. Marcus Satterfield, Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks. Justin Stepp, Wide Receivers. Erik Kimrey, Tight Ends. Lastly, Pete Lembo, Assoc. Head Coach/ Special Teams.
Clearly, Beamer has a vision, a vision to make Gamecock Football a successful winning team once again. Shane quoted his dad, Frank Beamer, who had been the head coach at Virginia Tech from 1987-2015 in his introductory press conference back in December.
“One thing he always talks about still to this day is take care of the little things, and the big things will follow… those details become big things and it represents everything. We’re uninformed and detailed and disciplined in all that we do and that carries over to the big things and allows you to have success.”
Building a roster
Since the end of the losing season, nine players have announced they are going into the transfer pool. This is rumored to be because of lack of playing time, the losing streak and the firing of Muschamp. This includes former QB 1, Ryan Hilinski. With the loss of numerous players, five new players have announced their transfer to the university from colleges in Georgia, Nebraska, and Delaware. Of the 12 true freshmen joining the program in the fall, 2 are from South Carolina. In his introductory press conference, Beamer said he hopes to get as many kids from South Carolina he can, everything they could want from a football team they can find locally in Columbia.
