The hockey world was shaken yet again on Wednesday morning when news broke that long-time Boston Bruins veteran, Zdeno Chara, had signed with the Washington Capitals.
Chara played 14 seasons with Boston starting in 2006. He was named captain the same year. He lead three Bruins teams to the Stanley Cup Final and won it in 2011.
“The Boston Bruins informed me that they plan to move forward with their many younger and talented players and I respect their decision,” He said in an Instagram post.
The 6-foot-9 defensemen is one of the most respected players and captains in the league as of now. He played 1,023 games in Boston with 148 goals.
In the statement posted to Instagram, he expressed his gratitude his time in Boston.
“Unfortunately, my time as the proud Captain of the Bruins has come to an end. I want to, first of all, thank the passionate and loyal Bruins fans, who shared the ups and downs of each season over the past 14 years. I’m proud that we were able to return the Stanley Cup to Boston and celebrating with all of you, in Boston, New England, and around the world, was a moment I will never forget,” He stated
The Capitals lost in the first round of the last two playoffs. Their first franchise Stanley Cup was in 2018. They hired Peter Laviolette to spark some veteran energy in an aging Capitals team. Adding the jolly gold giant that is Zdeno Chara will strengthen their blue line and add experience to their team.
“Thank you’ does not seem adequate to express my sincere gratitude. I will always be a Bruin. I will always love Boston.”
Hug a Bruins fan today.
