Keyontae Johnson following “simple commands”

On Saturday, December 12th, the University of Florida took on Florida State University in the great sport of basketball. About 5 minutes into the game, Gators star, Keyontae Johnson made an impeccable Alley-oop ahead of a media timeout. As the teams broke their huddles and headed back to the court, Keyontae collapsed face first. Both teams called for medical attention and Johnson was taken off the court and rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. UF flew his family out that evening to be with him. Head coach Mike White was also with Keyontae and his family that evening and into Sunday.

Today, Monday, December 14th, Johnson and his family were transported to UF Health in Gainsville, Flordia after receiving a multitude of tests. None of which were conclusive.

Before the school made its statement earlier today, Keyontae’s grandfather told USAToday that he was in a medically induced coma but doctors were planning to bring him out of that later. He is in critical but stable condition and virtually unchanged. He is following simple commands in the coma. This is good very good news.

This past summer, like most of his fellow Gators teammates, Keyontae Johnson tested positive for COVID-19. He made a full recovery and was cleared to participate in team activities. However, doctors across the country are finding that Coronavirus can lead to Myocarditis, a viral infection of the heart muscle.

I watched the video so you don’t have to. And I promise you don’t want to. I won’t say anything more.

Keyontae was averaging 19.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game and was a projected first-round pick for the 2021 NBA draft.
