Montrezl Harell Signs With
The Montrezl Harrell free agency sweepstakes are over as the former Clippers big man has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. Harrell was the most coveted free agent big man on the open market and has been an integral part of the Clippers success. He’s now found greener pastures in the same town but with the Lakers.
The news was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Harrell, 26, was drafted in the 2nd round by the Houston Rockets in the 2015 NBA Draft. The former Louisville product was picked 32nd overall, one slot ahead of where the Celtics selected Jordan Mickey (sad face). Of course, the Celtics picked Terry Rozier in the first round of that draft.
Harrell has turned himself into quite the player. Harrell has gone from throw in of the Chris Paul Rockets trade to legit force down low. Harrell won the 2019-2020 6th man of the year award with the Clippers. After playing on a $6 million per year salary, it was time for a raise.
The man called Trez has upped his scoring and rebound numbers every single year in the league. During this past season, Harrell averaged 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. It’s an impressive considering the star power on the Clippers.
Harrell now finds a home with the with the Lakers. Harrell was born in North Carolina and played with Terry Rozier at Louisville. The pair made sense and Charlotte had a clear need down low. The Hornets have needs at virtually every position as Michael Jordan tries to rebuild this team. They were thought to be a potential suitor.
The Lakers fill a big void and used their mid-level exception to sign Harrell. This move will serve as the replacement for Dwight Howard who signed a contract with Philadelphia this offseason.
