The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they declined Kolten Wong’s $12.5 million option for the 2021 season, making Wong a free agent this offseason.

What does this mean for Cardinal’s future?

In a press conference, President of Baseball Operations of the St. Louis Cardinals, John Mozeliak, explained that the team could bring Wong back for next season with a different contract. Mozeliak said that they are not ruling out his return. The best-case scenario is that he returns with a new deal and will be the everyday second baseman for the next few years.

Mozeliak stated that they might move on from Wong, who has been a defensive specialist and ranked one of the top second basemen in the league in defense. He has improved in offense and has become reliable at the plate.

If Wong leaves, there would be questions on who will be a potential replacement Tommy Edman or Brad Miller. This change could be a significant loss for the Cardinals and shape the 2021 season’s future.

Wong has a good value at age 30 with a lot of upsides. Wong broke into the scene in 2013, where he helped the Cardinals make it to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox in a strong rookie year. However, Wong had some bad luck that series (he was picked off by Red Sox closer Koji Uehara for the final out of Game 4). Wong could strongly impact any team that picks him up. He might end up in a new team.

Why did the Cardinals decline Kolten Wong option?

There could be multiple reasons for his option was declined. The Cardinals may have felt he is not worth that type of money and may sign him to a smaller contract. Mozeliak did state in the press conference that they might decline in payroll. Both sides are going to keep the window open for a potential return. Keep an eye out for the next couple of months to see what will happen with Kolten Wong and the Cardinals.
