Should Connor McDavid Propose A Clippers Style Sign-And-Trade?

What if Connor McDavid does what Kawhi Leonard did with the Clippers? Is a future sign-and-trade on the table? (Perry Nelson-Imagn Images)

Should Connor McDavid Propose A Clippers Style Sign-And-Trade?

Connor McDavid is the best athlete in any sport. He is an alien amongst men. The crazy part is, Leon Draisaitl was probably the best player on the planet and was totally robbed of the Hart. Edmonton has both of them, and McJesus still remains ringless.

We saw what happened this year. Florida actually took care of them sooner than they did the year before. Mostly because of bad team-building. This mistake is going to haunt them for a long time. So did the mistakes that happened while Ken Holland was in charge. It’s almost like the team that has no goalie and overpaid Jack Campbell got what they deserved.

The problem is that Edmonton is still in cap hell with no future assets. Oh, and Connor McDavid needs a new contract when the 2026-27 NHL Season rolls around. Sorry, but this franchise has made far too many mistakes for McJesus to continue to fork over half his earnings to the Canadian government.

What if there was a way for McJesus to have his cake and eat it too? Leave Edmonton and bring Draisaitl with him?

Don’t forget, this sort of happened in the NBA. Kawhi Leonard wanted to sign with the Clippers. He just wanted to bring another star with him. Paul George didn’t end up being a star, but that’s another story for another day.

Here’s the truth. With the way the cap is exploding, there is zero reason for McDavid to sign anything more than one-year contracts moving forward. That is, unless he can build something real with Draisaitl elsewhere. If it’s pitched as, hey, this is your chance to reset and do what the Oklahoma City did with Shai… maybe there’s a pathway to making this exact sort of thing happen.

The NHL is nothing like the NBA, and that’s for the better, but a deal like this would send NBA drama-queen-like shockwaves.

We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but as far as I’m concerned, the Oilers have run out of time to keep running this thing back. Someone else more competent deserves a turn with the best athlete on the planet.
