Rasmus Andersson only wants Vegas, but will the Flames be forced to oblige? Is Calgary actually forced to trade Andersson to the Golden Knights?
Let’s just call a spade a spade. Calgary doesn’t exactly have great leverage here. Sure, they can go into the season with Andersson, but if he sticks to his guns and only wants Vegas, the Flames are really limited in what they can get back. The Kings already tried to knock their socks off, but he rejected the deal.
Here’s what people don’t understand. Vegas has become Real Madrid in soccer. Except they’re doing it because of culture, team-building, and operating within a salary cap league. This is going to work the same way the transfer market does in soccer. If Real Madrid wants the player, they’re going to get the player, especially when the player wants them too.
So here’s what the Flames have to wrestle with. They can either waste time and let Andersson walk to Vegas in free agency, free of charge.
OR…
They can do a trade now and actually get something back.
Again, this happens with soccer too. You can either take this transfer fee now or get nothing when the contract expires.
Craig Conroy only has himself to blame. You will take Ben Hutton plus a few draft picks and like it. The same way Toronto had to take Nic Roy and like it in exchange for Mitch Marner. Don’t blame the player. The Flames did this to themselves with bad planning.
