Thatcher Demko Inks Three-Year Extension With Canucks

Despite dealing with injuries last season, Thatcher Demko is staying put in Vancouver. The Canucks’ star goaltender has agreed to a three-year extension worth $8.5 million per season, reaffirming his place as the franchise’s backbone in net. The new deal puts to rest recent trade speculation and signals full confidence in Demko’s ability to bounce back. When healthy, he’s one of the league’s elite—and Vancouver is betting big on him returning to form.

His play in 2024-2025 is definitely not what Patrick Allvin and Co. are expecting. The 29-year old suited up for only 23 games and posted a 10-8-3 record. Pair that with a .889 save percentage and 2.90 goals against average, and he looks like a different guy. The year before, however, is the guy they think is worth $8.5 mil per season. The San Diego native won 35 games and finished runner-up for the 2024 Vezina. A .918 save percentage and 2.45 GAA were career-best by a margin. His analytics may have taken a step back, but Vancouver firmly believes in him:

A Closing Window?

Bringing Conor Garland back on a 6×6 is a nice piece of business. However, this roster is still in limbo. The JT Miller saga was long-winded and a bad look. Asking Biz what to do with your dirty laundry is always gonna get some blowback. And if it’s seemingly written in the stars for Quinn Hughes to go to Jersey then they’ve got some serious decisions to make.

One of them will be Brock Boeser. His entire NHL career has been in a Canucks sweater up until now. The Minnesota native seemingly does not mind playing in the cold, which will enhance his list of suitors for this afternoon. His future should be revealed in a matter of hours. Losing him, especially to a different team in the west, will be a tough pill to swallow. Even if he’s not perfect, his goalscoring ability and larger stature is tough to replace in the near future.

Keeping Thatcher Demko is nice, but the Canucks still find themselves in a strange limbo out West—weighed down by internal dysfunction and inconsistency. Re-signing him shows they’re not ready to blow it up just yet, but this offseason will be telling. With a shaky locker room and playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Vancouver is staring down a crucial decision: double down on this core, or admit it’s time to start over.
