Zack Wheeler is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, but the end might be closer than anyone thinks. Wheeler is signed through the 2027 MLB Season, and as things stand right now, that could be his final campaign.
It’s being reported that Wheeler wants to spend more time with his family and could decide to hang it up even while being at the top of his game.
VIA The Athletic’s Matt Gelb (Don’t click the article. It’s from a trash company that hides behind a paywall. I’ll give you all the information you need below):
“Wheeler is unequivocal:” Gelb writes. “When his $126 million contract expires at the end of the 2027 season, he is done with baseball. He has four kids at home who need a dad.”
“Doesn’t matter. No,” Wheeler said. “It’ll be easy to walk away.”
Wheeler, 35, sports a 2.85 ERA with 101 strikeouts through 13 starts and 82 innings pitched this season. He’s been nails since showing up with the Phillies back in 2020. Humble brag, but he’s been one of the best calls this website has had since it’s existed. Had Vendetta been running a team, Wheeler wouldn’t be playing for the Phillies right now, and that’s just a fact.
We’ll see if this statement holds true, but if Wheeler is serious, we have about two and a half more years of watching his dominance. Maybe the Phillies can convince him to return for an additional season, but either way, he’s been arguably the greatest free agent signing in franchise history.
You’re welcome…
