The haters who cry are just going to have to continue to cry because the NHL isn’t doing anything about it. Teams like Florida, Dallas, Tampa, Vegas, Nashville, and Seattle will continue to operate at an advantage on the next CBA because the NHL will not change its state tax rules.
“Certainly, it’s an issue that some of our franchises have raised as a concern,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Wednesday evening in Edmonton, before the opening of the sixth consecutive Stanley Cup final to feature a team from a no-tax state. “What I’d say at this point is, we don’t share the level of concern that they have.
“These imbalances have existed forever. Like, there’s nothing new here. There are so many reasons why a player may choose to play in a particular location, for a particular team, for a particular coach that have nothing to do with the tax situation in that market. So, I don’t expect it’s anything we’re going to address proactively as part of this collective bargaining negotiation.”
Here’s my thing on this whole state tax debate. What exactly do you want the NHL to do about it? This rule goes well beyond the league. You’re dealing with the state legislature at the political level. There’s no reason for the league to stick its nose in that kind of stuff. Plus, if the Canadian teams are stuck with their tax rates, that’s on them. Why should the league bail out the rules that their government put in place?
Good for the NHL. The anti-NBA. They don’t roll over and create a wack set of rules every time someone complains. The NHL did the right thing here, and I’m not sure how it’s arguable. By the way, how exactly are you going to regulate this sort of thing when someone gets traded? You can’t, which is exactly why there’s no reason to mess with it.
