This one stings. Although I’ve mentioned this before, it’s now officially official. Ronald Jones is a bust, and scout Trey is going to have to take the L for this one. The exposing myself for my biggest NFL Draft whiffs continues with the sad story that is Ronald Jones.
Jones, the former USC tailback, had some serious moments in college. As mentioned in the stock notes, Jones just had a speed element and kept ripping these home runs off in the Pac-12. Tampa eventually took him in the second round, and I was on board with that pick 100%. It just fell off the rails quickly and the Bucs never really got their money’s worth.
Jones, 27, is already out of the league. He was awful as a rookie, then had two nice seasons after, followed by nothing, and already donezo. Jones tried to latch on late in his career with the Cowboys, and a heart condition got in the way.
This is probably the red flag that should have done him in. A 4.65 time at the Combine just isn’t good enough based on the kind of back that Jones was supposed to be. That burst wasn’t good enough, and he wasn’t good enough to not have that element on his side.
My track record for grading running backs speaks for itself. I haven’t had to apologize much at this position. This is one of them, and accountability is important. My apologies for leading you down the right path. I have no idea what Jones is doing now, but I wish him luck in his future endeavors.
