Doc Rivers is the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. After parting ways with Brett Brown immediately after the season, the Philadelphia brass has decided the Doc is their guy. Doc didn’t stay unemployed for too long, quickly landing on his feet after being fired by the Clippers.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Woj also added that Ty Lue was a strong candidate, but he is now expected to become the head coach of the Clips:
“The Sixers also interviewed Clippers assistant Ty Lue this week, sources said, but Lue is emerging as a strong candidate to replace Rivers with the Clippers. The Clippers are planning to interview other candidates, starting soon, sources said.”
Rivers, 58, will now get to coach his fourth NBA team. Previously, Rivers was the head man in Orlando, Boston, and LA for the Clippers. Doc now gets to coach a 76ers team that was swept in the first round by the Celtics. Oddly enough, Rivers goes back to the East and will get to see the Celtics a lot. The same team he won a championship with in 2008.
Rivers is now in charge of a roster that includes Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris, and Al Horford. Based on the talent level, it’s clear that the 76ers have underachieved. Fans now get to find out for sure if this was a Brett Brown issue or a roster construction issue.
Rivers has a tall task ahead of himself. Trying to balance a duo of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid has proved to be an impossible task. Additionally, Horford and Harris are expensive stars, not giving you the bang for the buck they should.
