Lucas Giolito Tosses a Gem in Playoff Debut for the Chicago White Sox

Lucas Giolito showed why he is the ace of the Chicago White Sox in his postseason debut. Giolito finished the season with 97 strikeouts over 71.1 innings and a 3.48 ERA. Lucas Giolito threw the 19^th White Sox no-hitter on August 15, 2020, striking out 13 batters. 

He pitched a perfect game in his playoff debut through six innings against the Oakland Athletics in the White Sox playoff opener.

Giolito allowed a clean single up the middle to Tommy LaStella, to start the seventh inning, ending his bid for a perfect game and no-hitter. Giolito retired the next three hitters in the seventh, including two more strikeouts, stranding La Stella. After 100 pitches, Giolito’s night ended in the 8th inning after allowing a second base hit. He finished the game with two hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts.

It didn’t take the Chicago White Sox long to get on the board in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series on Tuesday, as Adam Engel smashed a solo home run off A’s left-hander Jesús Luzardo in the first inning. Soon after Engel’s home run, AL MVP hopeful, and RBI machine, Jose Abreu blasted a two-run shot off Luzardo to swell the White Sox’s lead to 3-0. Yasmani Grandal added with a home run later in the game. Oakland scored one run in the 8th that was charged to Giolito. The White Sox won the game 4-1.

The late Roy Halladay, while with the Philadelphia Phillies, threw a perfect game in the 2010 regular season and a no-hitter in the postseason. Halladay is the only person to have a regular-season and postseason no-hitter in the same year. Halladay and Don Larsen, who pitched a perfect game for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series against Brooklyn, have the only two postseason no-hitters.
