Blues Expect Torey Krug To Medically Retire

Torey Krug didn’t play a single game for the Blues this past season, and it sure looks like we may have already seen the last of him. During the exit interviews in St. Louis, general manager Doug Armstrong was asked about the veteran defenseman and gave a pretty pessimistic reply.

Armstrong claims the Blues expect Krug to medically retire because of the ongoing ankle issues he’s been dealing with.

“I’m not expecting him to play again,” Armstrong said Tuesday. “Now, he’s hoping that I’m wrong, I’m hoping that I’m wrong and he’s pushing, but the surgery that he had, it was very, very invasive.”

“I don’t really think there’s much uncertainty with Torey,” Armstrong said. “I talked to him. He was at the rink the other day. He’s just getting almost normal, day-to-day living with his leg, his ankle.”

Krug, 34, will be heading into the final year of his contract next season, which will pay him a $6.5 million AAV. As long as the former Michigan State product remains on the shelf, he won’t count against the Blues’ cap sheet.

If you’re looking for good news out of all of this, the injury to Krug, placing him on LTIR, is what gave St. Louis the cap space to send in offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Something that totally elevated the franchise for the better this past year. Both of those guys look like future cogs in the St. Louis lineup for years to come.
