We’re almost done with all of these 2025 NFL Draft profiles. Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson is one of the last remaining on the to-do list, and he’s a fascinating player to discuss for several reasons. Let’s agree to skip the hoopla and jump right into things!
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 6, Week 8, Conference Championships, Rose Bowl, Senior Bowl (1), (2), (3)
Johnson, 22, was a three star recruit out of the state of Alabama coming out of high school. The Pinson native was ranked as the 275th overall receiver and 79th overall player in the state. Johnson spent three years at Troy prior to finishing up his final two years at Oregon. For what it’s worth, Nick Saban is on record for saying skipping out on Tez was one of the worst mistakes his staff made while he was at Alabama.
Since stepping foot at Oregon, Johnson has been incredibly productive. In 2023, he posted 86 receptions for 1,182 yards and 10 TDs. He followed that up with 83 receptions, 898 receiving yards, and 10 receiving TDs this past year. Let’s just call it how it is. He was Oregon’s best receiver and more productive than even a talented cat like Evan Stewart.
The negatives really stem from measurements, and that’s it. Johnson checks in at 5-foot-10, 154, which I don’t need to tell you is incredibly tiny for any player, regardless of position at the NFL level. It’s one thing to be tiny. It’s another to be tiny and then run a 4.51 at the Combine. Frankly, the Combine performance in general was really underwhelming.
The positive is that he clearly knows how to get open. The short area quickness factor is totally there. We saw all that route running prowess at the Senior Bowl, where nobody could cover him. When I say no one, I mean no one. Johnson was one of the best performers at the Senior Bowl, and everything we saw on the field felt like it translated.
Again, this one feels really straightforward. Small slot receiver who can get open, but the frame is a huge concern. No question he can run routes and has a slippery feel to his game. For being small, he makes YAC plays pretty consistently, too.
For the 7th round, I love the gamble here. Honestly, he probably should have gone two rounds higher, but I totally understand why he dropped. Good player. Time will tell if he’s just below the size threshold to translate.
