Gregg Popovich to step away as Spurs head coach

The end of an era for one of the greatest coaches not only in basketball history, but in North American sports history, is upon us.

Gregg Popovich will be officially stepping away from coaching and will transition into being the San Antonio Spurs’ full-time president, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Friday.

Popovich, 76, has been battling health issues for the last year. He spent all but five games away from the sidelines after suffering a mild stroke. He recently suffered a medical scare while he was at a restaurant, leaving the premises in an ambulance after reportedly fainting.

Over his 29-year career, Popovich won over 2,250 games with five NBA championships and three Coach of the Year titles. The Spurs made the playoffs every season from 1997-2019 under his guidance. The Spurs had 19 50-win seasons and six 60-win seasons–almost as many as he did seasons with fewer than 40 wins (8).

He signed a five-year extension ahead of the 2023-24 season that made him the highest-paid coach in the NBA at the time.
