The Toronto Blue Jays inked an 14-year extension with superstar slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Sunday night. The organization, which hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016, temporarily saved its credibility after missing out on multiple top-tier free agents over the last several offseasons.
However, Toronto still has in-house business it must accomplish to put a winner around their new $500 million star: Re-signing shortstop Bo Bichette, who is in the last year of his current contract.
Bichette, 27, spoke to the media Monday and revealed that while getting an extension done is the goal, there’s “nothing on the table.”
The shortstop’s 2024 season was cut short due to calf and finger injuries and experienced the worst season of his career. In each of his previous five seasons, he posted an OPS+ of 120 or greater–which is 20 percent above league-average. Better yet, from 2021-23, he
slashed .298/.339/.476, while his 125 wRC+ and .350 weighted on-base average (wOBA) over those three years ranked in the top-5 fifth-best amongst shortstops.
Unless the Blue Jays plan to wheel and deal for a shortstop elsewhere, retaining Bichette should be one of their utmost priorities before he hits the open market. The shortstop class for the next three winters is bleak–and one could assume that Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson (free agent in 2029) will sign a new deal between now and then.
Bichette is one of the best hitters at his position in the entire MLB when healthy, so making their superstar happy. This core has grown together, why not keep them both there for the rest of their prime and beyond while trying to build upon that foundation?
