Insert the Wolf of Wall Street meme here. Jakob Chychrun was one of the most talented players who was headed to the open market this Summer. The Capitals have successfully taken him off the board after agreeing to an eight-year extension worth $72 million.
Chychrun, 26, will carry an AAV of $9 million for the duration of the new deal that kicks in next season.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news. The Washington Capitals followed it up with their own presser.
“Jakob is a proven, dynamic defenseman in the prime of his career who has established himself as one of the premier blueliners in the NHL,” said Patrick. “His work ethic, skill set, and ability to excel in all situations at both ends of the ice make him a valuable asset to our team. He is a perfect fit with our culture and vision for the future, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that he will continue to be part of our organization for the next eight years.”
Washington now projects to have $14.125 million in cap space, per PuckPedia after this deal kicks in. They also got a contract done with Logan Thompson not too long ago. Otherwise, they’re pretty much bringing back their entire group next year.
The former 16th overall pick was acquired via Ottawa this past offseason and is in the midst of a career best season that includes 43 points (18g, 25a) in 65 games. It’s a great deal for both sides and a job well done for the Caps front office.
