I guess someone changed their mind on this. It turns out Alex Verdugo won’t enter the 2025 MLB Season as an unemployed bum after all. Well, still a bum and totally knucklehead. Just finally has a job now.
The Braves team account was actually the first to reveal the news. Verdugo is signing a one-year deal with Atlanta worth $1.5 million.
Yeah… it’s not all well and dandy for Verdugo who will start the season in AAA.
I do get why Atlanta did this. Ronald Acuna is coming off a season where he tore his ACL. Jarred Kelenic continues to prove he probably shouldn’t have been a former top ten pick in the MLB Draft. Jurickson Profar has also been nicked up in Spring Training. Michael Harris is probably the only sure thing the Braves have right now in this outfielder. Bryan De La Cruz is also on the roster if you count him.
What a fall from grace for Dugie. Guy goes from headliner the Mookie Betts trade, to being traded for a guy name Dick Fitts, to being on the scrap heap being forced to play in the minors. The Braves aren’t exactly a bad team so it will be curious to see how long it takes him to get called up.
Verdugo, 29 in May, slashed .233/.291/.356 with 13 homers in 149 games played for the Yankees a season ago. He’s not a black hole defensively so he has that going for him but it’s hard to be that big of a knucklehead when you can’t hit for power.
