49ers Add Mac Jones As Backup QB

The butterfly effect is crazy. Remember when the 49ers drafted Trey Lance over Mac Jones after Kyle Shanahan got bullied out of the guy he actually wanted? Well, Shanahan finally has his guy after the 49ers added the former Alabama signal caller to a two year deal in free agency.

Jones, 26, will sign a two year deal worth a total of $7 million but can reach $11.5 million with certain incentives. $5 million of the deal is guaranteed.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:

Jones spent this past season in Jacksonville and made seven starts for the Jags after Trevor Lawrence went down with injury. He actually performed at a somewhat reasonable level on a team that otherwise sucked. The Jags went 2-5 in his starts and he compiled a stat line of completing 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns, along with eight interceptions.

Can the former 15th overall pick in 2021 perform better now that he’s with Shanahan? Based on the magic that Shanahan has had helping revive Sam Darnold and helping develop Brock Purdy… it’s hard to not be slightly optimistic.

The craziest part of the career trajectory here is that Jones was somewhat capable as a rookie throwing for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns with Josh McDaniels. It’s been downhill ever since. If Jones is ever going to get back on track and prove he’s a legit quarterback, the time is very much now.
