It’s the news that all Eagles fans were desperately waiting for all of the off-season. But with Howiwe Roseman, it was more about when Zack Baun would get paid, not if. And paid Zack Baun got as his three-year contract worth $51 million with $34 million guaranteed, makes him the highest-paid linebacker in the league.
Before this season, many people didn’t even know who Zack Baun was. A third-round pick out of Wisconsin, many thought the Saints had nabbed a steal in the later part of the draft.
While at Wisconsin, Baun showed great instincts as an off-ball linebacker who excelled at stopping the run. This led many to think he would succeed in a Saints defense that values good linebacker play.
But for whatever reason, Baun was never able to truly establish himself as an everyday linebacker and was relegated to a special teams role with the Saints. For four years, that was the extent of Zack Baun’s role with the New Orleans Saints.
At one point, it got so bad for Baun that he admitted that sometimes he would sit in his car and cry. Knowing he was capable of so much more. Looking back, it’s crazy to see how this was possible. Dennis Allen, through all his shortcomings, was always seen as a defensive genius. So, how does a guy like Zack Baun never see the field for your unit?
That all changed when the Eagles signed Zack Baun to a one-year prove-it deal prior to the 2024 season. The rest, they say, is history. From his first game as a true linebacker, he showed people what the Saints couldn’t see, tallying 15 tackles and two sacks in the season opener against the Packers.
From there, the great games just kept stacking until it became clear that Baun was a legitimate candidate for DPOY. He quickly became a fan favorite for the underdog role he had embraced throughout his career. Many other fans even wondered how a player of Baun’s caliber could go unnoticed for so long.
It’s evident that Howie Roseman wanted to waste no time making sure Zack Baun stayed with the Eagles. It’s a classic win-win. Baun gets the long-term contract he desires, while the Eagles finally get a stud linebacker.
Baun quickly became the leader of that defense, a role I think he will grow into more this next season. Zack Baun has a chip on his shoulder the size of Wisconsin, and he isn’t gonna stop until he makes everyone eat their words.
As an Eagles fan, this is probably the best news I hear all off-season. Sure, bringing in Myles Garrett would have been a nice flashy move. But not if it came at the cost of bringing back guys like Zack Baun. This would have been my top priority if I was Howie Roseman; clearly, he felt the same way.
With Vic Fangio also set to return for another season, there’s no telling what Zack Baun and this Eagles defense will be capable of come next year.
