Before I begin, everyone should take accountability for this one because I think everyone was on the same page here. Chase Young was the second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he hasn’t come close to living up to it. The exposing myself on my biggest NFL Draft whiffs continues with the former Ohio State edge rusher.
Young, 26, is still in the league, but he’s far from an elite player he was drafted to be. After posting 7.5 sacks as a rookie, it’s been downhill since. He’s also on his third team now and can best be summed up as an average player who really only factors in as a passing down rusher.
Here’s my draft profile on Young coming out of Ohio State, if it piques your interest. Young’s final season at Ohio State, he notched 16.5 sacks. There was every reason to be excited about what he would become at the NFL level. In fact, his production was far better than both Bosa brothers too. Young was seen as the next coming of those guys, and there was no reason to think it wasn’t going to happen.
The tools are all there. 6-foot-5, 265, with all the athletic traits you could ask for. I’m not sure what the lesson to be learned is here on this one. The problem with Young that I see is that he’s addicted with getting up the field and ending up on the worst part of the field. Speed rusher who ends up behind the quarterback in no man’s land rather than finishing the play. Maybe Young will flip that switch coming up… but I doubt it.
Maybe it all worked out in the end. Washington picked Young instead of going with a quarterback like Justin Herbert. They ended up with Jayden Daniels instead, years later.
