Deshaun Watson just got the bag. After Patrick Mahomes landed his record deal, it felt like only a matter of time before Watson got his generational wealth next. The Houston Texans were smart enough to get a contract extension done now with two years remaining on his rookie contract.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The extension will be worth $160 million over four years. It’s a good deal for Watson, who will earn $39 million annually over that stretch. That makes him the highest-paid player over that period. Watson lands a contract that guarantees $111 million. It was a nice payday for a superstar quarterback.
Watson is without question one of the five best young quarterbacks in football. In 2019, Watson led the NFL in completions of 30 yards or more (33). Watson threw 26 touchdowns in each of the last two years while remaining a threat with his legs. He has also been very accurate in the previous two years, never dipping below 67%.
What stands out with Watson is the fact that he has saved this franchise. Head coach Bill O’Brien does his best to tank the roster year after year since he got personnel control. So far, it hasn’t mattered because Watson is that good. Watson is 21-10 as a starter for the last two years with a mad man ruining the roster.
In other news, another quarterback gets paid that isn’t named Dak Prescott. Don’t you think if Dallas were 100% certain that Prescott was an elite level franchise quarterback, he would have got his money?
