Canucks Acquire Marcus Pettersson

This trade is sort of, kind of, a continuation of the JT Miller trade. The Canucks essentially turned around and took assets from this trade to land another defenseman. Marcus Pettersson is on his way to Vancouver after the Canucks struck a trade with the Penguins.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet was the first to report the news:

The Rangers first round pick and prospect Melvin Fernstrom from the Miller trade head to Pittsburgh. Danton Heinen used to play for the Penguins so he’s back if anyone cares. Vancouver has also been trying to get rid of Vincent Desharnais and successfully accomplished that goal with this deal.

Make no mistake about it, Pettersson will help the D core in Vancouver. He can move the puck and has really strong metrics. The Canucks really needed D help so this move does make sense. The only problem is Pettersson is a pending UFA and giving up a first rounder doesn’t make a lick of sense unless they can get an extension done.

Maybe Drew O’Connor will help the fourth line but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.

The craziest part about this deal is the Canucks now have three Pettersson’s on their team. Two of which are named Elias Pettersson (one forward and one D). I just want to know if Vancouver decided to make this move because of the last name factor. After moving out Miller, this team is truly all in on Pettersson… until they decide to trade him too when this doesn’t work out.
