Indianapolis Colts Release Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson

The new Chris Ballard regime takes on its first move. The Indianapolis Colts have released linebacker D’Qwell Jackson in a salary cap purge. The team announced the transaction.

Head coach Chuck Pagano also released a statement regarding the move:

“D’Qwell is a consummate professional,” coach Chuck Pagano said in a statement. “The way he approaches the game is second to none. His leadership and mentorship provided a valuable example for the younger players on this team. We are grateful for all of his contributions to the organization and wish him the best.”

Jackson had 1 year remaining on his contract that he signed back in 2014. According to Overthecap.com, the move will roughly save Indy $5.5 million in salary cap space. Jackson was suspended for PED’s in the final four games of the 2016 season which might have prompted the move.

D’Qwell was one of the most dependable defensive players for the Colts during his tenure. Jackson, 33, recorded 366 tackles in three seasons for Indy. However, Pro Football Focus ranked Jackson the 80th best linebacker after a disappointing 2016 season.
