Big man got PAID. Detroit Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker has signed a 4-year extension worth $60 million, according to Ian Rapoport.

Taylor Decker’s 4-year extension is worth $60 million and contains $37.5 million guaranteed. Decker’s deal averages out to $15 million per year in new money. Taylor Decker will be anchoring the left side of the Detroit Lions offensive line for years to come, hopefully keeping Matthew Stafford upright and clean.

This deal is a fantastic deal as Taylor Decker gets a well deserved payday, but the other winner of this deal is Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford was on pace to have a career year in 2019, but a back injury had other things to say. I’m a big fan of Matthew Stafford and it was brutal seeing him go down with a broken back in 2019. A quarterback’s health is extremely dependent on their offensive line. If a team’s offensive line directly impacts how effective and how long a quarterback can play football. All it takes is one bad hit and a quarterback’s career could be over.

In the NFC North, quarterback protection is going to be more important than ever in 2020. The Chicago Bears have Khalil Mack rushing off the edge and we’ve seen what he’s done to Aaron Rodgers. The Green Bay Packers have Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith coming off the edge. The Minnesota Vikings aren’t a cakewalk either, Danielle Hunter is a force to be reckoned with and the newly acquired Yannick Ngakoue makes for a dangerous duo dressed in purple.

At the end of the day, Matthew Stafford’s health is critical to any playoff hops in Detroit. Extending Taylor Decker will help keep Matthew Stafford healthy for years to come.
