Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard is stepping away from basketball for the foreseeable future to be with family amid the raging Los Angeles fires that have plagued the city the last 24 hours, Bleacher Report NBA insider Chris Haynes first reported Wednesday.
Haynes mentioned that Leonard’s family was forced to evacuate.
According to the New York Times, the fires have displaced “tens of thousands of people,” while destroying entire neighborhoods because of strong winds and “dwindling” water supply.
Over 1,000 structures have burned as a result of the fire, making it the most dangerous fire in the city’s history. According to Victor Gordo, the mayor of Pasadena, hundreds of homes have been destroyed.
Los Angeles Lakers head coach offered his wishes to families that were affected as a result of the fires–also mentioning that his family was evacuated as a result.
“I want to acknowledge and send thoughts and prayers to everyone in Palisades right now,” Redick said Tuesday. “It’s where I live. My family, my wife’s family, my wife’s twin sister. They’ve evacuated. I know there are a lot of people freaking out right now, including my family.
“And from the sound of things with the winds coming tonight, I know a lot of people are scared. I just want to acknowledge that. Thoughts and prayers for sure and I hope everybody stays safe.”
According to Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, Leonard was able to make it to Los Angeles safely with his family being OK.
Life is much bigger than just basketball. Family comes first. We all wish that Leonard–and everyone who was affected by these horrific fires–are safe and well during this troubling time.
