One day before the league’s “unofficial” start to trade season, the Golden State Warriors acquired Dennis Schroder in exchange for an injured De’Anthony Melton plus three future second-round picks.

The cost was pretty insignificant for Schroder, having one of the best seasons of his career, albeit on an overperforming Nets team. Warriors forward Draymond Green offered his thoughts to reporters on the team’s new addition on Sunday.

“I don’t think he was necessarily brought here to fit. We play a certain style of basketball he does not really play. We need someone who can do the things he does,” he said, according to Danny Emerman of the Bay Area News Group. “I’m looking forward to us adjusting to him.

“We have to adjust to him because he’s bringing something this team needs. To just make him fall in line with what we do, we’d be wasting our time. We need somebody that can do what we necessarily don’t do, and I think that’s what he’ll be for us.”

Schroder, 31, is averaging 18.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game, having the most efficient shooting season of his career.

He has a reputation for being a ball-stopper, despite what his 4.9 career assists may suggest. That’s also the antithesis to what the motion-laden Warriors do, to Green’s point. Not all assists are created equally, but the 6-foot-1 point guard is posting the fifth-highest assist rate and assist-to-usage rate of his career, according to Cleaning The Glass.

The Warriors, who are No. 11 in adjusted offense, also lack self-creation outside of Stephen Curry. Thus, making this a complementary fit for Schroder. He’s scoring 0.95 points per possession (72.9 percentile) as a pick-and-roll ballhandler and 0.96 PPP in isolation (59.7 percentile). He also provides above-average point-of-attack defense given his small stature, alleviating pressure off of Andrew Wiggins, their best guard defender.

Golden State also got Schroder at a fraction of the cost. Both Schroder and Melton are expiring contracts, and one player will be out for the year with a knee injury, making the three second-rounders easy to part with. I don’t think this is a bad move, but I am very intrigued with how he’s incorporated into their system and his true fit with Curry in the backcourt.
