Grant Delpit Missed Practice with Possible Achilles Injury

Cleveland Browns’ 2nd round draft pick Grant Delpit left practice on Monday after a lower leg injury. Delpit was unable to walk off the field and had to be carted off. He was grabbing his lower leg as he left the field. Initial reports stated that Delpit may have suffered an injury to his Achilles. The Cleveland Browns, however, have made no official reports as of yet.

Coming into training camp the Browns were high on the rookie. As training camp started Grant Delpit performed just as good as he did at LSU. Delpit had been getting steady work as the third safety. He was also getting starting reps as the “heavy nickel”. The Browns have used this 3 safety, 2 corner nickel look quite a bit, during this year’s training camp.

Prior to the injury Delpit was in a prime position to make a difference in the Brown’s defense. He was competing with Andrew Sendejo for the starting position, and Delpit appeared to be winning. However, with this injury, his future is now uncertain.

This possible injury to Delpit severely injures the already hurt Cleveland defense. If he were to suffer a ruptured tendon, Grant Delpit would be out at least until the 2021 season. The most that the Browns can hope for is only a strained tendon. Although a strained tendon is still serious, it would allow Delpit to see the field much sooner than 2021.

Grant Delpit’s injury leaves an already injury-riddled secondary even more broken. On Monday starting cornerback Greedy Williams also left due to an injury. Greedy will join 3 other cornerbacks on the injury list. This list includes Kevin Johnson, M.J. Stewart, and Terrance Mitchell.

If Grant Delpit loses his rookie season due to a serious injury the Browns will be in big trouble. With Delpit gone, the Brown’s already small safety room will shrink even further. Karl Joseph will start at safety, but now the other spot is an unknown. However, after Grant Delpit left training camp, Sheldrick Redwine replaced him in the drills.
