India/Singer Trade is Mutually Beneficial

The biggest trade of the MLB offseason happened Friday night between the Cincinnati Reds and the Kansas City Royals. In the trade, Cincinnati got right-handed pitcher Brady Singer in exchange for Jonathan India, a second baseman, and outfielder Joey Wiemer. It is one of those rare trades in which both teams feel like they won by getting assets to address areas that need improvement.

Here is why it made sense from the Red’s perspective. Via Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon , “Singer is not known for power stuff and his sinker — the right-hander’s primary pitch — averaged just over 92 mph last season. He’s a ground-ball pitcher and often induces lighter contact. That should serve him well going from pitcher-friendly Kauffman Stadium to hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park.” In 179 2/3 innings for Kansas City last season (32 starts), Singer went 9-13 with a 3.71 ERA and 3.1 bWAR. He has much more experience pitching than anyone on Cincinnati’s pitching staff.

Did the Royals Also Win the Trade?

The trade made just as much sense for the Royals, though. Via Royals beat writer Anne Rogers, “The Royals have always been fond of India, and he was identified as a potential trade target during this past season, general manager J.J. Picollo said on Friday night. When Wiemer’s name was introduced as part of the potential package, the Royals felt comfortable closing the deal.”

Per MLB.Com, Kansas City GM J.J. Piccolo stated, “Clearly, we were looking for a leadoff hitter … We wanted to address on-base. We wanted somebody to provide consistency for us in that leadoff spot. And Jonathan’s going to do that. We were very happy to acquire him. And Joey Wiemer is another player that we’ve always thought very highly of, a highly touted prospect.”

Where India will play defensively is still up in the air as he has only played second base thus far. The MLB offseason has just begun—stay tuned for more exciting news!
