The New York Giants have released quarterback Daniel Jones after six seasons with the organization, the team announced Friday. Jones reportedly asked to be released, according to the press release that owner John Mara delivered Friday morning.
As a result, the Giants will accrue more than $22 million of dead cap for the 2025 season, saving $19.4 million, according to Spotrac.
Earlier this week, Jones, 27, was benched in favor of Tommy DeVito. In 10 starts, he completed 63.3 percent of his attempts, his lowest since 2020, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The sixth-year quarterback did deliver what was viewed as an ominous press conference on Thursday, suggesting that a potential end between the two parties was near even though it wasn’t official.
“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,” he said. “There have been some great times. But of course, we all wish there were more of those. I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparations.
“Of course, this season has been disappointing for all. And, of course, I wish I could have done more. I’m 100 percent accountable for my part. I did not play well enough, consistently enough, to help the team get the results. The reality of the NFL is it’s hard to win games and requires consistent performance from everyone involved.”
Jones will now go through waivers, which he will likely clear because of his contract. I’m interested to see if a potential playoff team in need of an extra quarterback, or one with an injured quarterback–like Dallas–takes a flier on Jones.
By the time 2025 rolls around, I expect at least one team to take a chance on the former No. 6 overall pick. Was he a good quarterback in New York? No. But was he in a favorable situation? Also no. Whether it’s justified or not, some team will talk themselves into him, depending on the respective cost.
