Stephen Vogt named 2024 AL Manager of the Year

First-year Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt took home the 2024 AL Manager of the Year award, MLB announced Tuesday.

Vogt beat out Kansas City Royals second-year manager Matt Quatraro and Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch for the award–two of his AL Central counterparts. Vogt earned 27 of the 30 first-place votes; Quatraro earned two while Hinch earned the final first-place vote.

Three other managers–Houston’s Joe Espada, New York’s Aaron Boone and Athletics’ Mark Kotsay–earned second-place votes, while Minnesota’s Rocco Baldelli and Boston’s Alex Cora earned third-place votes.

Two years removed from retiring, Vogt took over for now Reds manager Terry Francona after the longtime manager stepped down after 11 seasons. He guided the Guardians to the second-best record in the American League, finishing 92-69. It marked a 16-win improvement from the season prior, their best record (min. 160 games) since 2019, when it went 93-69.

The Guardians also had one of the youngest rosters in baseball last season, yet secured their second AL Central title in three years. Vogt, 39, becomes the fourth-youngest manager in baseball to win the award, tying former Guardians manager Eric Wedge while being one year older than Baldelli (2019), Buck Showalter (1994) and Tony La Russa (1983) when they won the award.

It wasn’t the strongest season for the American League, but the Guardians clearly established themselves as the best team in the AL Central. If they can add at least one quality rotation, they can be even more dangerous next year. Though given the franchise’s propensity to not spend, that may be a tall mountain to climb.
