Bruins Fire Jim Montgomery

Jim Montgomery is 120-41-23 during his tenure with the Bruins. Good enough for a .715 points percentage. That was deemed not good enough for the Boston front office. Just two years removed from the best regular season in NHL history, Montgomery has been fired by the Bruins. Associate coach Joe Sacco will become the new head coach in Boston.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff was the first to report the news with the hat tip to Rich Keefe over at WEEI:

The Bruins also released this statement on the decision to let go of Montgomery. This is what Don Sweeney said about the coaching change.

“Today, I made a very difficult decision with regards to a coaching change. Jim Montgomery is a very good NHL coach and an even better person. He has made a positive impact throughout the Bruins organization, and I am both grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to work with him and learn from him. Jim’s accomplishments as the Bruins head coach include a record-breaking and historic season, and I want to thank his entire family and wish him, Emily, J.P., Colin, Ava and Olivia all the success and happiness with their next opportunity. Our team’s inconsistency and performance in the first 20 games of the 2024-25 season has been concerning and below how the Bruins want to reward our fans. I believe Joe Sacco has the coaching experience to bring the players and the team back to focusing on the consistent effort the NHL requires to have success. We will continue to work to make the necessary adjustments to meet the standard and performance our supportive fans expect.”

Montgomery, 55, isn’t a perfect coach but the record speaks for itself. He also sparked the team’s offense when he first took over, which is a big reason why Boston won 65 games that year. If we’re being honest about things in Boston, two things can’t be denied.

A: It was a huge mistake firing Bruce Cassidy, who has since won a Stanley Cup with Vegas.

B: The front office is the problem in Boston. Not the coaching.

C: The reason why the Bruins stink right now is a lack of strength down the middle of the ice. A coaching change isn’t going to fix that.
