It has been confirmed that Detroit Lions star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson will miss the remainder of the 2024 season with a fractured fibula and tibia, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. He had surgery to repair both a broken fibula and tibia, the team announced Monday.
While sacking Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during Sunday’s game, Hutchinson’s left leg (the ankle area) whipped and wrapped around Alim McNeill’s shin. Hutchinson was then taken to Baylor White Medical Center in nearby Irving, Texas.
I would keep it that way for those who haven’t seen the video of his injury. It was an extremely gruesome injury, and watching it back in slow-mo made me squeamish.
However, Detroit’s aforementioned tweet about the successful surgery also mentions that there isn’t a definitive timeline for when Hutch could come back to the field. Per NFL.com, Lions head coach Dan Campbell had this to say when asked about his timeline for return.
“Let me say this: Look, it’s four to six months. I would never count Hutch out. Ever,” Campbell said. “So, probably a long road, but I would never count him out. I would say if anybody can make it back, it’d be him.”
The Lions are expected to look for depth at the pass-rusher position in free agency. Whoever they get, if anyone, won’t come even close to matching Hutchinson’s production.
The Lions are still have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, but Hutch was a huge reason for their success, and the loss of him hurts very badly. Not only should this make fans sad, but also all NFL fans. Aiden Hutchinson was on pace to break the NFL record for sacks in a single season–we are all being deprived of watching a fantastic player.
