Wojciech Szczęsny: Smoking Cigarettes Doesn’t Affect Performance

Wojciech Szczęsny put his retirement on hold to join Barcelona after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a season-ending injury. Szczęsny will now hold the fort down for Barcelona for the rest of the season. However, if you think that’s going to prevent the veteran goalie from living his best life, you are mistaken.

Szczęsny, 34, has no plans to quit smoking cigarettes and says it doesn’t affect his performance.

“There are things that I don’t change in my personal life and it’s nobody’s business if I smoke,” Szczęsny said in a interview with Deportivo Mundo. “I believe that it doesn’t affect what I do on the pitch, I work twice as hard.

“I don’t do it in front of kids because I don’t want to have a bad influence on them. Sometimes somebody will take a photo from the trees where I have a cigarette, that’s on them, not on me. If somebody thinks that I will change the way I am in my personal life they can think again because I am who I am. I’ve been this way my whole life.”

“If somebody thinks that I will change the way I am in my personal life they can think again because I am who I am. I’ve been this way my whole life.”

Szczęsny has spent time in the past with Arsenal, AS Roma and Juventus. In fairness to him, I’m not sure you have to be in the greatest shape in the world to play goalie. If he was ripping cigs as a midfielder, maybe it would be a different story.

Feel free to comment. Does it bother you that a professional athlete openly admits he rips cigs? Maybe it’s dependent on the sport and position but I’m quite sure this will rub several people the wrong way.
